As 2020 rolled in, I continued my position as a volunteer host at the Cave Creek Canyon Visitor Information Center (VIC) in Portal, AZ. During the last few days of December there were several inches of snow in the canyon and more in the mountains. It made for some very scenic vistas.

After leaving Bosque Del Apache in New Mexico, I worked my way to Tucson, where I attended the Loft Film Fest for the second time. I loved it last year, and this year was also wonderful. They showed somewhere around 50 independent and international films from various genres.

Bosque del Apache NWR From the Balloon Fiesta, I headed to the village of San Antonio, about 20 miles south of Socorro, NM. I wanted to spend a few days at the Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge, which is a wintering grounds for thousands of Sandhill Cranes, Snow Geese, Ross’ Geese and other waterfowl.

Chiricahua Mountains, Portal AZ From the Dragoon Mountains, I traveled around the north end of the Chiricahua Mountains to the community of Portal, AZ on the east side. This is the location of Cave Creek/South Fork Canyon, which is one of the premier birding areas in the country during spring migration. April and May are the peak months.

In late March I left the Tucson area. I enjoyed Tucson and the festivals, films, etc. But I was ready to leave the city for quieter places. I had briefly visited the Dragoon Mountains in October when I was in Sierra Vista. I plan to spend several weeks in southeast Arizona exploring some of the mountain ranges.
